The ECSO sets out on a musical journey this February, charting a course from ancient China to the crossroads of East and West. Voyage Along the Silk Road is a concert unlike any other in the ECSO’s history, a program that celebrates the rich traditions of the broader world and the composers who have woven them into the orchestral canon.

16-year-old star violinist Emma Carvalho performs The Butterfly Lovers, the beloved Chinese concerto by He Zhanhao and Chen Gang. Inspired by the ancient legend of two star-crossed lovers, this sweeping, lyrical work draws on the melodic language of Yue opera to create music of extraordinary beauty and emotional depth. Its soaring violin lines are among the most achingly romantic in all of classical music.

Turkish flutist Bulent Evcil joins us from Istanbul to perform Fazil Say’s vibrant Flute Concerto, a work that blends Turkish folk music with jazz-inflected energy and modernist orchestral writing. Say is one of today’s most compelling composer-pianists, and his concerto is as adventurous as it is accessible.

An evening of discovery, romance, and the music of a world in conversation.
