“Shawn Colvin is is an outstanding artist,” says Garde executive director Steve Sigel, “who will help launch a stellar music initiative at the Garde, including performers such as Herbie Hancock, Keb Mo’, Ricky Skaggs, Madeleine Peyroux, Tito Puente, Jr. and others.”
“I don’t go into writing a song thinking I’m going to speak for anyone other than myself,” Colvin once told the Los Angeles Times. “People have told me how much they can relate to what’s happening in these songs, so I think some experiences are shared ones.”
As a storyteller, Colvin remains both clear-eyed and warm-hearted, leavening even her toughest tales with a little tenderness and a lot of empathy. Similarly, her musical arrangements are both succinct and seductive. Colvin’s legacy in folk rock music has given her a strong fan base and critical acclaim. She experienced breakthrough success with her album A Few Small Repairs in 1996. The single “Sunny Came Home” reached the US Top Ten and won Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year. Her newest album has been called, “surprisingly poignant,” (People Magazine). “It’s one for the ages!” (The Washington Post)
Opening for Colvin is New York City-based STEWART LEWIS. With influences as diverse as Van Morrison, Stephen Stills, and Coldplay, Lewis' sound is part stripped down acoustic, part experimental electric with underlying folk influences, and pure soul. His powerful stage presence and delivery, coupled with his poignant lyrics and melodies have earned him the opportunity to open for such major artists as Sheryl Crow, Ani Difranco, Paula Cole, and Patty Larkin, who said, “He won't be an opening act for long!”
By popular demand, Garde patrons will now be able to purchase, at the Garde Box Office and on-line, a $5 transferable parking pass for any Garde event at the Cornish Parking Garage to assist with ease of parking. The Cornish Parking Garage is located at 192 Governor Winthrop Blvd in downtown New London, CT, with entrances at 192 Governor Winthrop Blvd. and 70 Union Street.
