Garde Arts Center Announces 2007/08 Opera Series

(NEW LONDON, CT) Eastern Connecticut’s premiere showplace for the performing arts, the Garde Arts Center, proudly announces its 2007/08 Opera Subscription Series.

Apr 03, 2007 1:35 AM - The Garde continues to be the region’s sole presenter of fully staged opera productions by international opera companies, performed with live orchestra and enhanced with screen-projected English supertitles.

The series opens with Czech Opera Prague’s production of Lehar’s THE MERRY WIDOW on Saturday, November 3, 2007 at 8 pm. Set in the intoxicating world of fin-de-siècle Paris, this sparkling story set to Lehár’s ravishing score dances and dazzles in a delightfully captivating tale of a rich widow and the man she chooses to marry.

Puccini’s TOSCA is presented by Teatro Lirico d’Europa on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at 7:30 pm. Floria Tosca, the beautiful opera singer, finds herself torn between the painter she loves and the loathsome chief of police who holds her lover’s fate in his hands, set amid the political turmoil of 19th-century Rome.

Teatro Lirico d’Europa’s production of Puccini’s most deeply-felt and imaginative opera, MADAMA BUTTERFLY, wraps up the series on Thursday, March 6, 2008 at 7:30 pm. It follows the simple story of love between a United States naval officer and a beautiful geisha, and is sponsored by Olde Mistick Village.

Pre-concert Opera Dinners offer theatre patrons the opportunity to experience fine dining in the Garde Oasis Room two hours prior to each performance. Each dinner is catered by local chefs, from the Gourmet Galley, A Thyme to Cook, or the Spa at Norwich Inn.

Subscription is the best way to experience Garde events with affordable and flexible options. Subscribers for the 2007/08 season get priority purchase and seating for subscription packages and single tickets until single tickets go on sale to the general public. Subscription packages offer savings of up to 21% and subscribers are guaranteed their same seats for each performance in the subscription series. The Garde Arts Center, now celebrating the Garde Theater’s 80th season, is southeastern Connecticut’s non-profit center for the performing arts.
