A NIGHT IN VIENNA

Mozart | Symphony No.36
Haydn | Cello Concerto in D
     Amy Ward-Butler, ECSO Principal Cello
Beethoven | Symphony No. 4

Imperial city of the Habsburg dynasty, Vienna was long the unchallenged capital of instrumental music. The ECSO’s first concert of 2025 will offer major works by three of the greatest composers of Western classical music, each associated with Austria’s City of Music. Mozart’s Symphony No. 36 in C Major, nicknamed the “Linz Symphony,” was written during a stopover in the Danube River city on his way back to Vienna from Salzburg in 1783. The same year, Joseph Haydn, who moved to Vienna at age 8 to become a choirboy at St. Stephen’s Cathedral, wrote his Cello Concerto No. 2 in D Major for cellist James Cervetto. The soloist will be ECSO Principal Cello Amy Ward Butler. Ludwig van Beethoven—who was born in Bonn, then in the Electorate of Cologne, and made his career in Vienna beginning in his early 20s—composed his Symphony No. 4 in B-flat Major in 1806. Though it tends to be overshadowed by the “Eroica,” which preceded it, and his “Fate” symphony (“Da-da-da-DUM”), which followed it, the charming Fourth is no less masterful and enjoyable.
