The Real McCoy, a feature-length documentary film, follows the life and times of Bill McCoy, the pioneer rum runner of the Prohibition era, who was known for not watering down the liquor … hence the expression, “the real McCoy.” Much of the story takes place along the Eastern seaboard, including New London.

Complete with never-before-seen footage from the National Archives and a recreation of the infamous “Rum Row,” the movie weaves together fascinating social issues from the Roaring Twenties, including how Prohibition came to be, Women’s Suffrage, the Ku Klux Klan, speakeasies, flappers, the growth of the US Coast Guard to fight the rum runners, and the eventual repeal of Prohibition.

The film, produced and directed by filmmaker Bailey Pryor of Mystic, CT, was adapted from the forthcoming book, The Actual McCoy by Stephen Jones at Flat Hammock Press. Following the film, both will answer audience questions for a behind-the-scenes look at this lively era that still impacts us today.

Come early, enjoy a drink from the cash bar, and listen to the real jazz band featured in the film. Or even better, attend the VIP Movie Party before the show, meet the filmmaker and author, step up to the cash bar for a drink from the liquor made famous by Bill McCoy, dance with a flapper actress, receive a copy of the movie DVD and a book on rum running, and sit in the special loge seats. Advance reservations required for VIP Movie Party. Period dress welcome!

Proceeds from this event will contribute to the education and preservation efforts of Mystic Seaport.
