The venerable “musical fable” about the mother of all backstage mothers (and her stripper daughter) was brought into being by the Ethel Merman—the blowzy, bellowing Broadway icon who created the role of Mama Rose. But it’s a testament to the show’s solid construction that the role has been successfully reinterpreted by such non-Mermanesque performers as Angela Lansbury, Betty Buckley, Patti LuPone and Bernadette Peters.
